Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress to help them remain alive. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting career. Her path did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. Then, she worked as an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first permanent acting gig. Also, she studied drama. She eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
